Life at the Oconee nuclear power plant was, of course, no vacation, but then nobody tried to sell it to us as that. Annabelle’s sales pitch had been solid, but she had already mentioned how busy people were. We got to see how busy exactly for ourselves in the first two days of our stay.

While nobody begrudged us our downtime and state of utter potential boredom, it was obvious that all the residents here had jobs, and very little chance of slacking off. I got why. After running for their lives, going scared and hungry for days or even weeks on the road, it felt good to worry mostly about missing the start of your shift or having to do overtime if a convoy of trucks arrived just as it was time for dinner. Nobody asked us to help, but once I had gotten a couple of hours of dozing in the library, I got curious about what was going on outside of the green-colored recreational area that we were allowed to be in.

I wasn’t the only one. Kas was done lusting over their computer setups, and he was only too happy to tag along.

I had a feeling that I wasn’t fooling him when I told him I just wanted to stretch my legs. Of course we were trying to get a read on the location and its inhabitants. We got along great with Osprey and his group, but our allegiance to the Enclave was questionable at best—and they were about to lose the “best game in town” status, if my first impression about the power plant was right.

Since I didn’t want to get in anyone’s way or overstep our welcome, I turned to the first armed guard I saw striding purposefully through the complex—which turned out to be Rick, from the front gate. He’d just come off his shift, and while he must have been yearning to grab a bite and relax, he was only too happy to play tour guide.

I didn’t mind, particularly when I noticed he seemed way more interested in chatting up Kas than me—who, in oblivious puppy mode once more, didn’t mind having someone to ramble on about one of the last released video games they’d both been playing before the shit hit the fan. It didn’t necessarily read like sexual attraction to me; more like two gamer bros being bros.

It was then it hit me that it would likely remain one of the last released games ever, even if game developers might have a better chance of still being alive than nurses or firefighters, I figured. Who’d have a need for that—and fund it—with our priorities suddenly all jumbled up? Same as who would still write books or produce movies?

Or would it be exactly those endeavors that people would turn to in their free time now that working a nine-to-five to pay off your mortgage was no longer anyone’s reason to get up in the morning?

I knew it was still way too early to
